TOM BREW

MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN BSc

When starting this course, they told us that we were all going to be Multimedia Architects – having creativity and knowing how to use it. They weren’t wrong.

My clean, minimalist design mentality was developed at Brunel and a year’s work placement at Webexpectations.com gave me the technical skills to make things happen.

With a passion for HCI and appreciation of simple, good design, I hope to have an exciting multimedia future ahead of me.

e-Splart - Interactive Web Art

Website: http://www.e-splart.com

I propose to design and build an online artefact that will allow visitors to create their own digital art within the confounds of their web browser.

Using virtual tins and tubes of paint, the users will have the freedom to conceive their own work of digital art by throwing and squirting paint onto a ‘canvas’. I will look at providing a facility to download their images in a variety of formats and/or sizes: desktop wallpaper, mobile phone wallpaper, wall posters etc., to use as they wish or share with others via an online tag driven gallery.

I also propose to take the idea of interactivity further by exploring the possibility of introducing motion tracking technology to my artefact. Via a webcam, the user could be able to actively interact with the painting process by using their hands to throw and smudge the paint on the canvas.

By allowing a user to do something as creative as painting their own art by means of motion capture really opens up the idea of HCI on the web.
