LUISA SOUTHGATE

MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN BSc

For these last four years I’ve been taught every media imaginable, sound, 3D, web design, film and so on, but uniquely not only the technology behind each media, but how to use them, together and apart, effectively. I also got the chance to put these new skills into practise by doing a work placement for my 3rd year, with a company that deals within the post-production side of the film business. Learning at Brunel has been an honour, but I can’t wait for the next challenge.

3D Build

My final year project is a fly-through of a 3D environment created entirely from scratch and designed by me. Hoping to finish it within a six-month deadline and knowing I would be taking on the Sound and 3D modules as well (both heavily time consuming) I decided to apply my interest of architecture and create my own building in an effort to advance my own, few, 3D skills. On face value this isn’t as complicated as creating a 3D character but it still proved as problematic – in an effort to make this building original I decided to make it round which created a number of problems: it reduced the floor space, any units fitted would have to be curved and how do you get windows or doors to fit, and indeed open. All of these teething problems had to be sorted out to make the final artefact believable, and to further add to my t roubles I wanted to have photo-realistic elements within the house, if not on the house itself. One place I felt I achieved that was in my use of chrome – the material sparkled just as I wanted it to throughout the walk-about and fitted beautifully on the tap I created in the kitchen. This project pushed me as far as I could go within the time limit, it was completed with 2 days to spare, and naturally there are things I would want to change if I did it again but overall I’m rather proud with what I produced. These last 6 months are the first time I’ve done 3D professionally and now I’ve gone through the process I look forward to advancing my skills in this, and other areas.
